Featuring Album’s Co-Writer, Co-Producer and Saxophone Great, Larry Williams
“Hocus Pocus,” the second single from Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/musician/producer, Randy Goodrum’s critically acclaimed album Red Eye, is out now, on the artist’s own Clark St. Records. Co-written by the award-winning Goodrum and his go-to collaborator Larry Williams, the song celebrates the great fortune—and the incomparable joy—of finding that very special person. Goodrum added the distinction of video producer and director to his impressive resume with the creation of the lyric video for “Hocus Pocus” which can be seen on his YouTube Channel or through www.RandyGoodrum.com.
“When you fall in love,” says Goodrum, “there are a number of doors you can go through. You can be impressed by the way the person looks; you’re attracted to them. Or that person makes you feel better than you felt when they weren’t there; that’s another doorway in. And then there’s another one, where all your pins are knocked down, like in bowling; you’re disoriented, but in a good way. That’s what this song is. It’s a particular kind of emotion that is hard to put in words.”
Yet it’s the very words that Goodrum sings, the carefully crafted, universally embraceable emotions he expresses so eloquently and concisely, that resonate so deeply. Each successive verse lays out another relatable scenario, tied together by a five-word chorus—“Hocus Pocus, here you are”—that is at once both implausibly simple yet larger than life: Before you weren’t in my life, the lyrics of “Hocus Pocus” propose, now you are, and everything has changed for the better.
The song came about as Goodrum and Williams, who co-authored half of the songs on Red Eye, brainstormed together, conjuring up concepts for the in-progress album. “Sometimes Larry would give me a song’s start, some vamps and some chord progressions,” Goodrum says. From there, the song quickly took on a life of its own, as so often happens when they work together.
“If I hear a snippet of something and it sends me off into that ether where I do my thing, then that’s worth its weight in gold” Goodrum says. “It takes me someplace new. Larry will do something that I never anticipated, and it always adds fresh air and new thoughts. When we sit down to write together, we just take off.”
It’s those undefinable qualities that have consistently inspired other great artists to collaborate with Goodrum. His songs have collected Grammys, Academy of Country Music awards, and ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honors, and he has been inducted into the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Steve Perry, the former lead vocalist of Journey, says, “I have been a fan of Randy Goodrum from the very first moment we met and wrote our first song, ‘Foolish Heart.’ Red Eye is a continuance of his deep love for songwriting.” The world-class bassist Nathan East called Red Eye “masterfully record” and added, “It should be required listening for anyone who wants to understand composition, arranging, vocal skills, production and engineering,” while saxophone legend Dave Koz summed up the album as “amazing…there is so much here!” And no less an icon than Judy Collins credits Goodrum with “inspiring me to write new songs.”
Red Eye has received media praise not only in the United States but as far away as Japan and France. Now, with the release of “Hocus Pocus,” its magic will continue to spread far and wide.
