Randy Goodrum Premieres Lyric Video for ‘Hocus Pocus,’ the Second Single from His Acclaimed Solo Album RED EYE
01.26.21 -- Randy Goodrum, the Hall of Fame singer/songwriter/musician/producer whose 2020 release, Red Eye, has received acclaim from critics and fellow artists and musicians alike, has added video director and producer to his resume with the premiere of the lyric video for his latest single, “Hocus Pocus.” The animated production, conceived and created by Goodrum, vividly illustrates the song’s message of positivity, hope and destiny. Its lyrics elaborate on the great fortune—and the incomparable joy—of finding that very special person. The video can be seen here https://youtu.be/P0BNGx7i1KA.
“‘Hocus Pocus’ suggests that one person can have a profound emotional effect on someone else, in an instantaneous and magical way,” says Goodrum of the song.
The second single drawn from Red Eye, following the title track, “Hocus Pocus,” co-written by the award-winning Goodrum and his go-to collaborator Larry Williams, is released on the artist’s own Clark St. Records. Red Eye has received media praise not only in the United States but as far away as Japan and France. Goodrum’s previous songs have collected Grammys, Academy of Country Music awards, and ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honors, and he has been inducted into the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. His fans in the music industry include such superstars as former Journey vocalist Steve Perry, the legendary singer Judy Collins, and saxophone great Dave Koz.
The sparklingly lively lyric video for “Hocus Pocus” depicts both Goodrum performing the number and a sequence of graphics—ranging from witty to philosophical—corresponding with the words being sung. From images of Shakespeare to basketball, the “Hocus Pocus” video presents a constant stream of surprises— unfurling much like the kind of unimagined romantic attraction described within the song.
“I like the balance of serious and fun stuff,” Goodrum says. “An image coming out of the blue is always a good device. I think it makes the video far more interesting to avoid anything predictable. Actually that’s a good rule of thumb for art in general.”
Goodrum taught himself the art of video production so that he could create the “Hocus Pocus” piece by himself. “I use the program Final Cut Pro X to make videos,” he says. “I try to do much of it manually, rather than using built-in presets, so that the end result will be original and fresh. I use images collected from sources that properly license the images and videos clips. I record clips in my studio using green screen and other devices.”
Although he utilizes very specific images in the “Hocus Pocus” video, Goodrum hopes that each viewer will take away a personalized message while viewing it. Still, there are some universal take-aways within its message. “The song suggests that any person, anywhere, could have this kind of experience,” he says. “They could meet someone that could knock them off of their feet by simply being themselves, a serendipitous event that couldn’t possibly be planned or predicted. The person in this song is astounded by his or her luck that this phenomenon actually happened, like magic—hence the title and line, ‘Hocus Pocus.’ The kind of occurrence described in the song can be wished for but is highly unlikely. It’s like buying the winning Powerball ticket.”
